Davis & Main is the quintessential Fan District restaurant. It is a corner restaurant: Main Street and Davis Avenue (hence the name). It is small and intimate but still cozy. There is a very understated sense of style about the place. You will feel comfortable bringing someone special (whether personal or business) here.

The waitresses work on a team basis and pool their tips so there is never a problem finding "your" waitress. There have been evenings where I had four different waitresses: one to take the order, another brought drinks, a third served the meal, and a fourth one handled the check. Most of the time, however, it is just one waitress that serves you.

My favorite appetizer is the smoked trout, pork loin, and Gouda cheese plate with lingonberries (~$7). I sometimes have this a bowl of their soup de jour for my meal. The artichoke and fontain cheese is very good as are the chicken wings.

The main course items are reasonably priced from $9 to $18. The farm-bred catfish is lightly breaded and grilled. The filet mignon is masterful and not the huge hunk of meat that so many places feel obliged to serve (and which I find rather a turn off). The pork tenderloin is fabulous. All entrees are served with grilled vegetables and fresh baked rolls.

The sandwich side of the menu has two stellar items: the hamburger (yes, the hamburger!) and the pork tenderloin sandwhich. Both are served on a gigantic fresh baked roll with slaw and fries.

Desserts are limited but good: ice cream, cheesecake, and maybe a regular cake.

They could use more single malt Scotches but other then that the bar is fully stocked and the bartenders make honest drinks. They feature many Virginia wines and locally brewed beer. Be sure to try their Irish Coffee, easily the best this side of the Buena Vista on Fishermans Wharf.

Davis & Main is unusual in one other aspect: they have a social conscience. They recycle their glass, aluminum, and cardboard. They try to use returnable bottles. They are active in the neighbor and helped to turn this section of town into a nice place to visit or live in.
